John James Audubon: American Artist and Naturalist
September 18, 2010 through January 9, 2011
The name John James Audubon is synonymous with the study and preservation of American wildlife. His masterpiece, The Birds of America folio and his lifetime of written journals stand as an unsurpassed contribution to the world of fine art, natural science and American history and literature. His visionary and prophetic concerns for the environment continue to speak to new generations throughout America and the world today. This traveling exhibition presents a selection of extremely rare and valuable Audubon works of art and artifacts, as well as original Audubon letters, rare books, photographs, personal items, and sixty of the original large hand colored Double Elephant Folio engravings from The Birds of America, selected from the collection and archives of the John James Audubon Museum at Henderson, Kentucky.

This exhibition of 56 photographs by the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum photographer Carolyn Russo redirects our attention to the often-overlooked “simple beauty” of aircraft design. With precedents in the work of Robert Delaunay, Charles Sheeler, and Arshile Gorky, among others, Russo uses fine-art photography to bring out new visual dimensions of these powerful symbols of the 20th century, transforming them into works of art.
