Volunteer Opportunities

Docent

Docents (museum guides) lead tours of traveling and permanent art exhibitions in the museum galleries. After reviewing the docent manual (for background on informal art education), and after attending their first exhibition training, new docents shadow experienced docents as they lead tours. When they feel comfortable doing so, new docents will lead their own tours. Tour groups may include visitors aged preschool through adult. Docents also help facilitate tours of science-based exhibition by directing visitor traffic through the exhibit stations. An interest in art, willingness to learn, and the ability to speak to groups of 15 to 35 people are the only requirements for this position. Flexible hours.

Discovery Guide

The guides conduct presentations in the Weather and Light/Color Rooms of the Discovery Center. Enthusiasm, an interest in science, and the ability to speak comfortably in front of groups of students are the only requirements for this position. The museum provides scripts for the presentations, background information on weather, global warming, and the physics of light and color, and training. Flexible hours.
