Skylab, the Portable Digital Planetarium

Introduce your students to the wonders of astronomy with our new digital Skylab. Up to 24 students at a time can view the night sky, journey to planets, learn star mythology, discover black holes, meet ancient astronomers, and even pilot their own “spaceship” through the universe.

An inflatable astronomy laboratory for your school, the dome is 10.5 feet tall and requires floor space of 25 x 25 feet. It can be set up in a gym, lunchroom, empty room, or on a stage.

With one of our shows you can take your students to visit the planets or find out what would happen near a black hole. We regularly add new shows. Current shows include:

  • Amazing Astronomers of Antiquity (22 min.)
  • Black Holes (40 min.)
  • Clockwork Skies (5 min.)
  • Extreme Planets (33 min.)
  • Saturn: Jewel of the Heavens (38 min.)
  • Seasonal Stargazing (7-15 min.)
  • Storybook Sky (about 20 min.)
  • The Uniview Experience (open length)
  • The Uniview Experience is a digital database that provides an opportunity for your students to “fly” the projector “spaceship,” with the touch of a button, through the solar system, the galaxy, and the universe.

We can also provide classroom activities to supplement your show.

This flexible and valuable teaching tool is available from Lakeview Museum for $285 (plus travel costs) for two class-period presentations and $70 for each additional class. Your booking will include a qualified presenter and delivery of the Skylab. The standard IRS mileage rate will be charged for bookings beyond 10 miles from Lakeview Museum. For more information or to reserve Skylab, call Dave Grebner at Lakeview Museum 309/686-7000 ext. 132, or email at dgrebner@lakeview-museum.org

    Outreach to Space

Lakeview Museum is reaching out to rural and underserved populations with a set of interactive science exhibits built by the world-famous Exploratorium in San Francisco. The portable Outreach To Space exhibits are designed for families and children and teach a number of space-related concepts in a fun, hands-on learning environment. Discover how we know what the Sun and other stars are made of; what happens to an astronaut who goes into space without a pressure suit; and how the stars of the Big Dipper look from other places in space, among many other fascinating things.

Look for the Outreach To Space exhibits on display at the following venues on the following dates:

    8/8 - 8/17 Illinois State Fair (Springfield)
8/22 - 8/23 Marshall County Old Settlers Days (Lacon)
    8/29 - 9/1 Kewanee Hog Days
    9/6 - 9/7 Pekin Marigold Festival
    9/13 Dunlap Days
